8. The Precambrian (from 3.5 Billion to 540 M.y)

The oldest fossils are stromatolites, remnants of bacterial activity from 3.5 billion years ago. Little is known of life in the Precambrian era up to 540 million years ago, since only invertebrates existed (fossilisation was rare).
